About Loopwheels

Loopwheels was invented by Sam Pearce, a mechanical engineer and industrial designer from Nottinghamshire, who set out to do something people had been trying and failing to do for over a century: put suspension inside a wheelchair wheel. The company was founded by Sam and his wife Gemma, who runs the business, and first launched in 2013 - initially as suspension wheels for folding bicycles, via a successful Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign that raised over £61,000.  

It quickly became clear that wheelchair users saw the potential for the technology to transform their own experience. Loopwheels for wheelchairs entered production in 2015, and by 2017 the company had stopped making bike wheels entirely to focus on the wheelchair market full time.   

In June 2022, Gemma Pearce was awarded a CBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List for services to Innovation and Diversity - a remarkable recognition for a small, independent British manufacturer.  

Today, Loopwheels sells in over 22 countries and is registered and regulated as a medical device manufacturer with the MHRA in the UK. Every Loopwheel is assembled by hand in Nottinghamshire, with the carbon composite springs made by local archery bow makers KG Archery, just three miles from Loopwheels' base.  

What Loopwheels can offer

Loopwheels replace standard spokes with three carbon composite springs, which act as an in-built suspension system. The hub of the wheel effectively floats within the rim, absorbing shocks and vibrations before they travel through the chair and into the rider's body.  

Independent research, including a 2024 study by the University of Pittsburgh, found that Loopwheels deliver a significant reduction in vibration and shock for wheelchair users in real-world use - with meaningful improvements in comfort and reduction in pain.  

This matters particularly for people with SCI, for whom exposure to vibration can cause or worsen pain, spasm, and fatigue - and can limit how far or how long someone is able to be in their wheelchair on any given day.  

The Loopwheels range currently includes:  

  • Loopwheels Urban: an all-rounder for everyday use across urban environments and light off-road e.g. country parks, suitable for a wide range of user weights. 
  • Loopwheels Extreme: designed for off-road use, with a wider tyre particularly suited for use with power attachments such as handbikes and Triride devices  
  • Loopwheels LT: for lighter people, from 40 - 60kg user weight up to a maximum 120kg total load.   

All models are available in a range of colours, including three iridescent options launched in 2024. Loopwheels fit most manual wheelchairs with standard quick-release axles. A trial period is available before purchase.
